Donald L. Budenz, MD, discusses the many treatment options for patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension in this CME activity. Pharmacological and surgical treatment options are examined, including the safety and efficacy profiles of each. Dr. Budenz explores the rationale behind first-line therapy choices, and considers issues that directly affect the patient (eg, cost, convenience, quality of life). The activity concludes with a discussion of an overall treatment strategy for patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Upon completion of the activity with an acceptable posttest score, you will be able to download the presentation.

Needs Assessment
Through needs assessment surveys, literature searches, advisory board suggestions, and recent specialty publications, ImproMED has identified that a need exists to educate ophthalmologists on current glaucoma treatment options and practices. Issues surrounding safety and efficacy of the various glaucoma treatment options have been examined in recent clinical trials, and have led to the reconsideration of current treatment strategies for glaucoma patients.

Target Audience
General ophthalmologists and those with a subspecialty in Glaucoma.

Overall Purpose
The purpose of this activity is to provide ophthalmologists with a thorough understanding of the safety and efficacy profiles involved with various glaucoma treatment options.

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this CME activity, participants should have increased overall skills, knowledge, attitudes, and performance, with a specific ability to:

Skill(s)
Identify the different classes of medications used to treat glaucoma, and discern their various mechanisms of action

Knowledge
Compare the safety and efficacy profiles for glaucoma treatment options

Recognize which patients are likely to benefit most from early glaucoma treatment, based on an assessment of demographic and clinical risk factors

Discuss rationale of first-line therapy choices: medication and surgery

Attitude(s)
Consider the effects that the choice of therapy has on the patient (cost, compliance, convenience, quality of life)

Performance
Examine recent advances made in the treatment of glaucoma and consider how these impact clinical practice

Designation of Credit Statement
ImproMED designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.0 category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the activity.
