Richard K. Parrish II, MD, graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences and then received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1976. He completed an internship in medicine at the University of Alabama, a residency and chief residency at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and both clinical and research fellowships in glaucoma at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute/Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital at the University of Miami School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. He is currently the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and a Professor at the University of Miami School of Medicine.

Dr. Parrish is an Editorial Board Member and Associate Editor for the American Journal of Ophthalmology, on the Editorial Board for Ophthalmic Surgery and Lasers, Ophthalmology Times, and Contemporary Ophthalmology, and a Contributing Editor to Ophthalmic Practice. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Society for Clinical Trials, and has received both the Honor Award and Senior Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Numerous universities across the United States and around the world have invited Dr. Parrish to speak, and he has also presented at meetings for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, American Glaucoma Society, and the Pan-American Congress of Ophthalmology. He has written chapters in several books, contributed articles to such journals as Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology, and the American Journal of Ophthalmology, and has written numerous other professional publications.

Michael A. Kass, MD, received a bachelor’s degree and a medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Illinois. He completed a residency in Ophthalmology and was a clinical fellow in glaucoma at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Kass is currently Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Dr. Kass is the Chairman of the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, and has authored several articles about the study. He has also written more than 100 articles on other ophthalmology topics, as well as many abstracts and chapters in books.

As a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Dr. Kass has received both a recognition award and a Senior Honor Award from that organization. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, and a member of both the American Glaucoma Society and the American Medical Association. Dr. Kass is a scientific reviewer for several journals, including Annals of Internal Medicine, Current Eye Research, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the Journal of Glaucoma. He is also a Director of the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation.

Donald L. Budenz, MD, graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1987. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Pennsylvania and an Ophthalmology residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He was Assistant Chief of Service and a member of the glaucoma service at the University of Pennsylvania for 2 years. Dr. Budenz also completed a Heed Foundation Fellowship in Glaucoma at the University of Miami School of Medicine, where he subsequently became a faculty member. He became associate professor of Ophthalmology at that institution in 1999.

Dr. Budenz is an editorial reviewer for several medical journals, including Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Journal of Glaucoma, Retina, Eye, and Ophthalmic Surgery and Laser Therapy. He has been the principal investigator in a number of clinical trials on ocular hypertension that have been funded by the National Eye Institute and National Institutes of Health. He also received a research grant from the University of Pennsylvania to investigate in vivo gene transfer into the murine trabecular meshwork and corneal endothelial cells. Concurrent with his research, Dr. Budenz has been published widely in the field of glaucoma; he has authored a textbook, Atlas of Visual Fields, contributed chapters to several other books, and written or coauthored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles.

Dr. Budenz is the recipient of a Golden Apple Award for Best Resident Teacher (University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine) and has been a guest lecturer at numerous universities, hospitals, and medical societies in North America, Europe, and South America. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, the Society of Heed Fellows, and the Florida Society of Ophthalmology. He is currently a graduate student in Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.

M. Roy Wilson, MD, MS, graduated magna cum laude from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania in 1976 and received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1980. He then completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Harlem Hospital Center, as well as a residency in Ophthalmology and a fellowship in Glaucoma at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary of Harvard Medical School. Dr. Wilson later completed a Master of Science in Epidemiology at UCLA in 1990. He has served as a professor at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science and at UCLA. Currently, Dr. Wilson is the Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice President for Health Sciences at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He also works at Saint Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

Dr. Wilson has received numerous awards, including an Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and has been listed in Best Doctors in America since 1996. He is a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Glaucoma Society, and the American Ophthalmological Society. He serves on the Glaucoma Advisory Committee for Prevent Blindness America.

Dr. Wilson serves as a reviewer for such publications as the Journal of Glaucoma, American Journal of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, Journal of the American Medical Association, and Archives of Ophthalmology. Paul Palmberg, MD, PhD, is Professor of Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami School of Medicine, in Miami, Florida. He received both his medical degree and his PhD in biochemistry from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, and completed his residency, chief residency, clinical and research glaucoma fellowships at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Dr. Palmberg’s work in the field of glaucoma research has primarily concerned the relationship between intraocular pressure and visual field progression, useful in choosing “target pressures,” a term he introduced in helping to write the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s first preferred practice pattern for Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma. He has been studying the use of antimetabolites in filtering surgery since 1982, and has developed techniques to deal with such side effects as hypotony maculopathy and painful or leaking blebs. He is a co-recipient of the International Glaucoma Review Award for the most significant glaucoma research in the year 2000 for his role in the AGIS report on the relationship between IOP and visual field loss.

Outside of clinical glaucoma work, he performed the natural history study of diabetic retinopathy that was the basis for the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, introduced HEPES buffer and a color indicator in corneal preservation media (Modified MK media), and studied trabecular cell biology.

Dr. Palmberg has authored or coauthored more than 80 journal articles and book chapters, lectured in 42 countries, and trained 48 clinical fellows and 92 foreign observer fellows.
